From 1/2 the face to the full face.

For my fall final exam, art 1 students completed the other half of the face drawing. For my spring final exam in art 1, students had to draw the entire face. They could reference the picture from the fall, but they had to draw from observation as well.  I love the progression!

 

Below are just a few examples, but these are not the only ones that were awesome. I was so pleased with the results of the project and love how you can see the individual students artistic development!

 

I would love to give credit to the individual studetns here, but I'm not since the faces are here. If you know these students, give them a shout in person!

Art 1 Perspective City

I know this isn't a new project.
And truly it was one that I didn't do for years as "everyone does this.."
but.. okay, I see why its a go to art 1 project.

We began the perspective process as soon as we started the second semester. I've found over the years that with schedule changes and sickness, that the first project of the 2nd semester needs to be a fairly cut and dried and an easy to transport project.

This one really does fit the bill.

I wanted to be a little more creative, but in the end,
we just focused on drawing lines to the 2 vanishing points and being consistent.

This was rather difficult for some.

However, it was a great differentiation project as all but
one student could do this project with limited modifications.

The basic guidelines for a 70 were:

2 vanishing points

6 buildings

at least one door and window on all buildings

sidewalks

a crosswalk

signage (building or street level)

Some students did significantly more than the minimum as they wanted an A.

(side note: instead of giving guidelines as to what makes a 100, I find that my students do better when they know what earns them a 70, the passing mark. This doesn't overwhelm students as much and it gives me flexibility to really reward the extra effort. Additionally, instead of having a bunch of students not turning in projects because they are afraid they won't do well, I have almost every student turn in their projects as 99% of the students get the minimum finished before the due date.)

Here are some of the work samples. These are all art 1 students and most of my students have never had an art class until they walk through my door.

Once the projects were graded the students were given the opportunity to take it back and add color for an extra credit grade.

Positive and Negative Shape Project

I realized that I never posted any of the finished Positive and Negative Shape projects. As you would imagine with Art 1, some students did fabulous and some struggled. All finished projects are posted on my artsonia site. http://www.artsonia.com/museum/gallery.asp?exhibit=563730 

Here are a few of the varied projects. I really like this for an early in the year project. I like that it focus on shape, but give students a chance to play with color. I also see very quickly which students are going to be able to draw from observation and which students are going to struggle.

The basic assignment is to draw the negative and fill with a color and pattern. The object is supposed to touch all four sides of the picture plane.

These projects have been digitized, uploaded to artsonia, been displayed in an artshow and are now on their way home to mom. Love this kind of project!

keeping it real

Often times we teachers only want the world to see the good stuff that we do. Heck, bloggers in general only want to blog about the cute things, not the meaty stuff!

With that in mind, and working to update my student's Artsonia accounts more frequently, I decided that instead of just posting the "quality" pieces, I want to post the progress! The vast majority of my students have never had an art class and don't have even the most basic knowledge of art principles or practices. Because of this, I think it is vital that we celebrate all work and watch the progress, not just applaud the pieces that we would deem to be quality art projects.

So in an effort to keep it real.... I have already posted 157 student created drawings. Many are sketchbook assignments and most of them would be considered not really worthy of posting, but I am proud of the work that my student's do, so I am displaying it publicly for them and their families!

Students drew the geometric objects for a few days and then we moved onto other objects. We are currently making a positive and negative shape drawing/painting.
